Decorate your Home for Halloween

Thorndown-Halloween-Stencil-Craft-PackAlthough there won’t be much Trick or Treating going on this year you can still celebrate at home. Using a Peelable Glass Paint Halloween Stencil Craft Pack is the perfect way to decorate your home and re-use or upcycle old items.

Thorndown’s Peelable Glass Paint is made from a 100% recycled plastic resin, is low in odour, has virtually no VOCs and is non-toxic making it perfect for kids. Being water-based it’s also really easy to clean up with just water but don’t let your brushes dry out as that makes it a lot harder to remove and don’t wear your Sunday best as paint likes to stay on clothes. The best part is that when Halloween is over you just peel the paint off your windows and mirrors to remove it!

[fusion_gallery image_ids=”7243,7241,7239,7238,7237,7244″ layout=”” picture_size=”” columns=”6″ column_spacing=”10″ hover_type=”” lightbox=”yes” lightbox_content=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””][/fusion_gallery]

Make a spooky scene on windows and glass doors, or create scary tea lights and Halloween treat jars using old jam jars and plastic pots. Thorndown Peelable Glass Paint Halloween Stencil Craft Packs include 4 x 40ml pots of paint in Bat Black, Goblin Green, Ogre Orange and White Witch, reusable stencils made with a durable 190gsm acetate sheet, and an art brush.

[fusion_gallery image_ids=”7227,7226,7224,7223,7221,7220″ layout=”” picture_size=”” columns=”6″ column_spacing=”10″ hover_type=”” lightbox=”yes” lightbox_content=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””][/fusion_gallery]

Paint old glass jars and plastic pots then fill them with spooky treats for the kids. Rather than going out with a Trick or Treat bucket you could do a treasure hunt at home for the kids to fill their buckets with. Glass lanterns are perfect for decorating with spooky stencils and you can even pour Peelable Glass Paint out to let it dry and cut out Halloween shapes to create window clings that stick on windows and mirrors. Visit the Window Clings project page for tips on how to do this.

Create a Chic Garden Office with Thorndown Wood Paint

Thorndown-Paint-Jo-Thornhill-Shedio

Working from home was a common affair for many people and nowadays it’s something that is far more normal and here to stay. It has many advantages from cutting out the need for any travel being better for the pocket and environment, and can lead to greater productivity from working in a relaxed and quiet environment that allows you to focus.

That is, as long as you have your own space! Garden studios and sheds can provide the perfect home office environment, allowing you to escape your home and enter a space dedicated to you and your work. Decorating it helps to create an atmosphere that is right for you, whether it be a plain minimalist space or a cosy homey vibe.

Interior Stylist Joanna Thornhill, built a ‘shedio’ at the bottom of her garden, creating the perfect space for her to work from. She painted the exterior with Thorndown Mercury Grey Wood Paint and Blackdown on the window frames, door frames and fascias. A classically cool combination that sits well in the garden, complimenting planting rather than dominating the space.

She used Mercury Grey Wood Paint on the floor boards too, protecting them and tying in the exterior to the interior space. On the interior walls she painted Dormouse Grey with the velvety brown grey colour giving the interior some warmth and depth.

Painting the ceiling in Greymond Wood Paint brightens up the space, keeping to the grey theme with this soft off-white, whilst adding extra reflected light. She contrasts it perfectly by painting the ceiling beams with Blackdown wood paint, giving it a traditional country cottage feel. Hanging house plants add natural fresh green into the space with the architectural spiky stripy leaves of the Spiderplant adding interest.

Homely furniture and soft furnishings along with cool vintage finds creates a wonderfully warm and inviting space to work and relax in. The gorgeous vintage mirror on the wall behind the log burner add vintage chic and reflect even more light throughout the space.

Adding vases, pot plants, occasional lighting, and retro nik-naks creates a chic bohemian home office for Jo to feel inspired by as she sits at her desk working away, with a relaxing area to take well earned breaks in.

Painting your home office will not only protect the wood from dirt, damage and decay, but also gives you the opportunity to create a truly unique space.

Wood&Space

A great name for a great company that specialises in creating wooden buildings perfect for your space.

Sat in the beautiful county of Devon is this very posh shed company that specialises in designing and building the most stunning bespoke sheds and timber buildings.

Wood&Space can make whatever your imagination comes up with as long as it’s physically possible and not too large! These elegant sheds are designed to enhance the garden and built to last. And of course painted with Thorndown Wood Paint helps to protect the timber so it looks fabulous and can last a lifetime.

[fusion_gallery image_ids=”11971″ layout=”” picture_size=”” columns=”1″ column_spacing=”10″ hover_type=”” lightbox=”yes” lightbox_content=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””][/fusion_gallery]

They are installed with such care that they look as if the garden has been designed around them. This shed painted in Thorndown Yew Green Wood Paint has many attractive design features from the cedar shingle tiled roof to a stable door and sash windows painted in Thorndown Tor Stone. Painting the main body in a dark colour helps it to disappear into the planting and sit with the boundary fencing, whilst the contrasting lighter wood paint colour on the door and windows accentuates the design features and brightens the building drawing your eye to it.

[fusion_gallery image_ids=”11969″ layout=”” picture_size=”” columns=”1″ column_spacing=”10″ hover_type=”” lightbox=”yes” lightbox_content=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””][/fusion_gallery]

This shed painted in Bishop Blue Wood Paint perfectly compliments the surroundings and takes you into the open landscape beyond. The building also has many attractive design features from the star cutout to the gable detailing above the door and attractive landscape picture windows along the side wall. For the natural look you can leave timber unpainted but paint it with a couple of coats of our UV Clear Wood Paint to seal it with a water-repellent coating and protect the wood from the weather. The UV blockers will also prevent fading of the timber colour from the sun’s rays.

Quality of service is high and design and build is carried out to offer the best value for money, with sheds being installed from Devon to London and up in Edinburgh. Steven sees using Thorndown Wood Paints as part of his high-quality package and said that he’s “exclusively using your paints from now on, they are so much nicer to apply than others, it almost makes painting a pleasure, almost mind!”. August Bank Holiday Monday Closure

Factory Closed for August Bank Holiday

August-Bank-HolidayPlease note that the Thorndown paint factory will be closed on Bank Holiday Monday 31st August 2020. We’ll all be putting our feet up so the office will be closed and no orders will be going out.

Couriers will also be having a well deserved rest so no deliveries will be made on Bank Holiday Monday.

If you’d like some paint for the Bank Holiday weekend, please place your order at the start of the week or as early as possible. Although our couriers have worked really hard to return to the normal next day delivery service, sometimes the volume of packages to process for delivery exceeds the staff they have in their sorting hubs, due to social distancing restrictions in place because of Covid-19. At these times it can take a couple of days for packages to be delivered so please plan with delays in mind.

In some areas Royal Mail are still really struggling with staff shortages and although we send all small packages out 1st class, sometimes samples and craft packs can be greatly delayed getting through the postal system.

Have a lovely long weekend and hope the sun shines wherever you are!

Grow Your Own Extra Space with Planters

Thorndown-Paint-GYO-Planters-Blog

Timber Planter Garden Extensions

Thorndown-Wood-Paint-on-Forest-Slender-PlantersI’ve been growing my own veg for a few years with varying degrees of success. This year many seeds germinated and grew on to be healthy young plants, which was great but I ran out of space very quickly in my veg beds.

As a solution I used some timber planters to extend my plot and at the same time created a nice border between the veg beds and my drive.

To protect timber planters you do need to paint them with Wood Paint which will seal them against the weather and rain ingress, which leads to rot and deterioration or damage to the planter. It also gives you the opportunity to use colour to create garden design features that compliment the planting and look lovely in the garden.

Design Havens for Heroes

Thorndown Partners with Design Havens for Heroes

We are delighted to announce that we are partnering with the fantastic cause, ‘Design Havens for Heroes‘.

This charity was created and launched by Interior Designer, Francesca Rowan Plowden, to give frontline NHS staff a haven to relax and rebuild in once the pandemic crisis has passed. The campaign has built rapidly with numerous leading designers, tradespeople and companies all offering their services.

NHS staff have been working around the clock in extremely challenging and emotionally exhausting and deeply upsetting conditions. We all know how nice it is to come home after a hard days work and relax surrounded by your home comforts. Under the conditions NHS staff have been working in it’s been a challenge just to keep on top of the shopping, cooking and cleaning, with no time for DIY. Coming home to a room that hasn’t been decorated for decades with dodgy furniture, old ripped wallpaper or faded paintwork can be thoroughly depressing, and when you’re facing a crisis at work, the need for a calm and pleasant space to relax in is incredibly important.

And this is where Design Havens for Heroes step in. You can nominate NHS staff via the Design Havens for Heroes website or Instagram account, and as soon as the pandemic allows, an army of volunteers will carry out room makeovers in the homes of those that have been healing and keeping us alive.

You can also donate to the campaign and say thank you to our NHS heroes!

Tips on Greenhouse Shading

Thorndown-Greenhouse-Shading-Peelable-Glass-Paint-rainbow flowers

When and How to Shade a Greenhouse

When you’re growing your own in your greenhouse, protecting your plants from extremes of temperatures will keep them healthy and growing well.

Keeping a thermometer in your greenhouse will help guide you to the right time to add shading to protect seedlings and plants from heat of the sun. RHS guidelines recommend that temperatures don’t exceed 27°C /81°F, otherwise tissue damage can occur.

Sun-flag (partial collapse that looks like wilting), leaf scorch and desiccation can all be signs of plants and seedlings struggling with high temperatures.

Shading with Thorndown Peelable Glass Paint is the perfect way to easily apply shading to greenhouses and has the added advantages of looking nicer than traditional shading paint, and is nice and easy to remove. At the end of the season simply pick at a corner and peel off the entire sheet!

Try to resist putting shading up too soon as seeds need plenty of light to germinate and seedlings need sunlight to grow. April is normally the month when the sun starts to increase in strength and intensity and can often reach high temperatures that require shading towards the mid and end of the month.

However, the cold and humid nights can cause extended delays with the drying process and can cause the Peelable Glass Paint coating to slip if any rain comes before the paint has totally cured and bonded to the window surface. Wait until weather conditions are consistently warm with a strong sun.

New Mural Welcomes All to Glastonbury

Thorndown-Paint-Frank-Harwood-Mural-Blog

Glastonbury Waving Woman Mural

Painted by artist Frank Harwood with Thorndown Wood Paints.

If you travel into Glastonbury on the A361 from the direction of Pilton and the Glastonbury Festival site, you will be welcomed by a beautifully cheery woman waving. This colourful mural stands on the side of a house opposite the sacred Chalice Well at the foot of Glastonbury Tor.

Designed and painted by artist Frank Harwood for owners Brad and Sharon, the mural was painted with Thorndown Wood Paints and is another addition to the Glastonbury Mural Trail. Frank developed the design to be welcoming and to reflect the feminine nature of the town, especially the High Street, and wanted it to be in contrast to goddess designs.

Using inspiration from figurative Staffordshire pottery designs, Frank developed a design of a rural shepherdess figure and worked with a papiermache model to get the pose right. He wanted to make reference to the classical poses of strong warrior women, but tempered with the idea of fruitfulness and bounty.
