Award Winning Branding

When we set-up Thorndown it was formed to be a forward-thinking, creative paint company with high standards and great eco-credentials. This stand-out new brand has won two prestigious awards for branding design, being an acclaimed Silver Pentaward 2018 and highly sought-after iF DESIGN AWARD 2019.

After 30 years working in the timber treatment and preservative industry, Managing Director Ben Thornborough had become “increasingly frustrated by the unnecessary complexity of the woodcare category. The trend to create sub categories of sub categories only serves to confuse the customer further, and take up valuable shelf space instore. So we carefully crafted our Wood Paint to be so high-performing, versatile and easy to use that it can be used on any wood, anywhere.

With a visionary concept in mind, Thorndown worked with leading branding and design agency Brown&co to develop a brand that would fully reflect the identity. The founding partners of Brown&co have an incredible pedigree and reputations that spread worldwide. Knowing how crowded and competitive the paints market already is, Thorndown knew it was essential to get the branding spot-on in order to compete with leading brands and multi-national giants that dominate the market.

Through strategic research and concept mapping it was confirmed there was a strong place in the wood paint market for a specialist company that delivered paint of technical excellence but with the consumer appeal of more popular brands best known for interior decorating and up-cycling.

In addition to wood paint Thorndown was also launching with a new and revolutionary Peelable Glass Paint, made with a 100% recycled plastic resin. This unique product crosses over many categories from garden care where it is used as a greenhouse shading product, to construction and trade as privacy and security shading, and right over to the homes market for interior design and conservatory shading, completing its journey in the arts & craft market as a hobby and art paint product.

The brand that Brown&co designed was perfectly crafted to convey the quality, simplicity, and artistic nature of this new and original paint company. It has been recognised and admired within the branding, packaging and design industry, scooping a Silver Pentaward 2018 and iF DESIGN AWARD 2019.

Pentaward is the first and most prestigious worldwide competition devoted exclusively to packaging design.

The iF DESIGN AWARD is described as “one of the most important design prizes in the world. For 65 years, designers and manufacturers have strived to win the internationally renowned iF label for design. Winning an iF DESIGN AWARD is a seal of quality for exceptional design and outstanding services. For consumers and users, it is a symbol they can trust.”

On winning the iF DESIGN AWARD Director of Design, Caroline Thornborough said “I am so proud that we have picked up another amazing award for the design and branding of Thorndown. We were so lucky to work with a world-class team at Brown&co that got us, and understood what we wanted to achieve.

They took our dream and created a thing of beauty that fully conveys all that we and our product stands for. As part of the branding design process we have created a range of tins that not only look gorgeous but have practical improvements too.

Our unique tins are wider making them more stable and easier to use. We have left plenty of room from the paint line to the top of the tin so that when you stir your brand-new paint tin, half of the paint doesn’t end up being slopped all down the sides of the tin.

It’s brilliant to have Thorndown and the design work recognised internationally and delighted that so many people think it’s as great as we do!”

Ben Thornborough adds “We carefully crafted our paints to be so versatile and easy to use the only decision a customer has to make is which colour to choose.

“Professionals and home consumers rave about the Wood Paint as the best in the market for ease of use and performance. Using the latest VOC free technologies we have created a paint that can be used on any wood, anywhere; decking, sheds & summerhouses, garden furniture, kitchen cabinets, interior floors, and furniture. It’s a new type of wood care product that needs little preparation, is simple and easy to use and crosses all categories making it the only wood finish a store would need to stock.”
