Price Increase 2026

Thorndown-All-Paints-Colour-Chart

After a succession of price increases of up to 17% for raw materials, packaging, couriers, energy, employment, and pretty much anything else you can think of, we are having to increase the price of our paint products.

We haven’t increased our prices since 2024 and are still very competitively priced compared to other high street brands so you’re still getting good value for money for premium paints. For example, when comparing our Wood Paint prices to comparable Coat and Farrow & Ball paint their 2.5 litre tins are £72.00 and £89.00 respectively (advertised prices on websites April 2026) as opposed to ours which is just going up to £60.00.

A price increase of less than 10% on Wood Paint and Wall Paint will come into effect from Monday 1st June 2026.

In good news the price of Wood Preserver & Stain Blocking Primer will stay the same and Peelable Glass Paint will not go up either as it is primarily made of a 100% recycled plastic resin so is not as affected by current global conditions and price increases. You can email us on studio@thorndown.co.uk to request a new price list for Retail, Trade, Wholesale or Dropship customers.

Best of the West 2025

Thorndown-Paint-Best-Selling-Colours-2025-Blog

Every year we review the best-selling colours across all paint ranges and pack sizes, showing a fascinating insight into ongoing and emerging trends.

Below we share with you a round-up of the results for the hotly contended top 20 charts! For the full analysis please follow this link to the Best Selling Colours page on our website.

Peelable Glass Paint

This chart slightly bucks the normal colours trend as uses for the paint vary greatly from greenhouse and conservatory shading to large art installations and smaller art projects at home and in community settings such as schools. Because of this you will see a mix of heritage tones and vibrant colours throughout.

Black and white are always at the top of the charts as they’re the neutral choice for shading and security screening, with rainbow colours leading the chart in the 150ml tin size, with paint being used for creative projects.

Wall Paint

Since launching our high-performance Wall Paint range it’s been fascinating to see how colour selection is altered when coming inside the home. Your needs and influencing factors are different when considering spaces such as bedrooms where nurturing calming atmospheres dictate colour palettes, or where colour choices can be more personal in the comfort of your own home.

In the top 20 you can see how stone colours have become increasingly more popular over the last year, and how fashions for denim blues and calming restorative pinks see these colours represented.

The chart-topping colours of stone, a natural heritage green, and white accent perfectly demonstrate interior design trends.

Wood Paint

Outside in the garden neutrals, natural wood tones and heritage colours dominate, with some bright vibrant colours such as Rowan Berry Red and Sundowner Orange continuing to be popular colours to brighten up exterior spaces.

The denim trend has had an influence with Bilberry Blue, Squirrel Blue and Adonis Blue making their way back into the top 20. Field Green has become a firm favourite in all pack sizes with other natural heritage greens reflecting the influence of nature in the home and garden. You can also see how the grey trend is becoming replaced with earthy stones in both interior and exterior design, with Tor Stone popping into the chart.

UV Clear is a highly popular choice across all pack sizes with people wanting to protect and preserve the natural colour of new timber.

Best Selling Paint Colours 2024

Thorndown-Paint-Best-Selling-Colours-2024-Blog

Every year we review the best selling paint colours across all of our paint ranges to look at colour trends and see which colours are most popular.

It is always fascinating to see the results and can help with decision making if you’re looking for a paint colour and don’t know where to start!

WALL PAINT

In 2024 we launched our high performance water-based eco Wall Paint in a range of colours from the Wood Paint range. This luxurious flat matt durable paint contains VOC free exterior-grade colour pigments that are deeply rich and stay true for many many years.

Thorndown-Wall-Paint-paint-colour-chips-Colour-Chart

All of the popular off-whites, heritage tones and vibrant colours feature in the colour range and are proving to be a hit with interesting variations. Colour choices are varied throughout all pack sizes with a beautiful spread from muted tones to strong black, green, grey and blue into softer pastel colours then joyful vibrant pops of orange, pink and teal. Things are black and white at the top 10 of the best-selling colours chart for 2.5 litre tins with the elegant Whey White taking top spot, followed by Swan White and Blackdown, with the dark heritage tones of Field Green, Bishop Blue and Cavepool Grey along with the softer heritage colours from Reed Green and Slade Green, to Dulcote Stone and Greymond.

The fashion for pinks is evident with Rock Rose, Cheddar Pink and Foxwhelp Red being popular choices across pack sizes, joined by the pretty Purple Orchid also spreading beauty in homes.

Colour choice will always be a personal matter and the wonderful variety of shades and colours shows how paint can make a room warm and enveloping, light and airy, or joyful and fun. You can explore all of the Wall Paint colours in our shop or by requesting a colour chart with hand painted chips so you can see exact colours unaffected by digital screens. Email studio@thorndown.co.uk or call us on 01458 258 588.

WOOD PAINT

A number of changes have occurred this year in the Wood Paint top 20 chart with the vibrant colours of Rowan Berry Red and Cheddar Pink coming back in with Purple Divine and Rock Rose making their first appearance and Sundowner Orange remaining popular.

Overall heritage tones remain dominant with natural wood tones increasing in popularity. The gorgeous tones of Old Sage Green and Sedge Green reflect a desire for natural beauty in the garden, with Mercury Grey and Cavepool Grey adding bold elegance to timber structures.

With the VOC exterior-grade colour pigments in our high-performance satin Wood Paint that is specifically engineered for exterior use, the paint colour and coating will stay strong and true for many years, despite what the elements throw at it!

PEELABLE GLASS PAINT

Dragon Red took the number 2 spot in the 750ml tins due to an art installation in Germany on the theme of Paint the Town Red, that painted the large glass entrance to a museum in red then peeled it off dramatically at the end of the event. The unique resin in Peelable Glass Paint is made from 100% recycled plastic, giving it a unique flexibility and ability to be peeled off windows at the end of a season, or if left on it hardens to a highly durable water-repellent coating.

Other than Dragon Red at the top of the chart, the traditionally popular choices for greenhouse and conservatory shading paint remains black and white followed by a beautiful array of heritage tones, with the surprising entrance of Muddle Brown accompanying popular translucent colours of Goblin Green and Bandit Blue. 150ml art tins are dominated by rainbow colours at the top with an attractive selection of heritage tones following.

Whether you are simply drawn to a colour or get inspiration from interior design images, colour psychology or the natural world, with thousands of colours available to order from at Thorndown, we can give you what your heart desires and deliver it direct to your door!

THORNDOWN LAUNCH NEW WALL PAINT

Thorndown-Yew-Green-Wall-Paint-Blog-Post-Header

Thorndown are delighted to announce the launch of their brand new Wall Paint, providing a complete high-performance paint range for the home and garden.

Thorndown’s Wall Paint is a stunning flat matt high-performance eco paint with minimal VOC and odour for indoor use. Beautiful deep colours crafted with strong VOC free exterior-grade colour pigments that sit in a water-based durable and dirt resistant coating. Designed using sustainable, recycled and recyclable raw materials where possible. For use on any walls and ceilings, anywhere.

The paint has been developed to be the best interior wall paint on the market, tested and proven to be much tougher than other premium brands. With architectural exterior-grade colour pigments that perform at the highest levels in light resistance and durability tests, the paint colours stay strong and true for many, many years.

There are 56 colours in the core colour range, with an elegant heritage palette to suit all spaces. In addition with our tinting technology we can also create over 1800 RAL Classic and Design colours, 2050 NCS, 434 British Standard BS318C, BS4800 & BS525F, and Pantone C colours.

As with all of our paints, performance, people and the planet come first when we are developing and creating our products. We use the same high-performing 100% recycled plastics resin for our Wall Paint, blended with another highly durable resin, along with the best VOC free exterior-grade colour pigments on the market, and sustainable fillers made from recycled waste marble.

At less than 3% gloss the flat matt paint leaves an elegantly sophisticated coating that is durable enough to be used on any surface within the home, from bathrooms and kitchens to hallways and bedrooms.

In fact our Wall Paint is so good you can use it on metal radiators, interior woodwork from skirting boards to doors, window and door frames, to wood furniture. It’s so durable you can even use it on exterior woodwork and timber garden products for a flat matt finish, although it will require more regular maintenance than our Wood Paint which is specifically designed for exterior use.

Inspired by the rich and beautiful countryside surrounding the paint factory in Glastonbury, Somerset, Thorndown paints are named after flora, fauna, people and places found within. Explore the county of Somerset with Thorndown paints, creating beautiful spaces in your home and garden!

Thorndown supply Wood Paint to The Flood Resilient Garden at Chelsea Flower Show

Thorndown-Paint-Flood-Resilient-Garden-BlogHB

We are thrilled to have supplied wood paint to The Flood Resilient Garden at the 2024 Chelsea Flower Show!

The garden was created by prolific garden designer, journalist and author, Naomi Slade (who we named our Slade Green Wood Paint after), and Dr Ed Barsley, founder of The Environmental Design Studio.

Our paint factory is based in Glastonbury, Somerset, the beautiful county reputedly known as ‘Sumersata’, meaning ‘the land of the summer people’ as historically the land was flooded during the winter months so the people only came down from the hills in summer. Flooding is a part of our landscape and something that makes the Somerset Levels and rich wetlands within so unique and stunning, but global warming is affecting Somerset as it is the majority of the world and has led to more frequent, extensive flooding, often not just confined to the winter months.

The Flood Resilient Garden demonstrated planting and landscaping tricks that can be used to defend against, work with, and tolerate flooding. It is set in a beautiful natural space, rich in planting and perfect for people and nature.

It was a pretty wet Chelsea with numerous deluges of rain that were a great test for the garden and the highly water-repellent nature of our Wood Paint. You can see how the wood paint coating repels water on the picture of the pergola below.

Bishop Blue Wood Paint was applied to the wall bordering the edge of the garden to represent the interior wall of the home, with RAL 7021 Black Grey painted on the pergola, and Cavepool Grey on windowsills with a diluted wash on the compost bin.

If you weren’t able to make it to Chelsea then take our virtual tour of the gorgeous garden here.

Price Increase

Thorndown-Range-Pack-Shots-Grid-pic

As with all companies we have experienced continued price increases on all of our packaging and raw materials.

Our prices have remained the same since April 2022 but we cannot continue to absorb all of the price increases and have to raise our prices.

From Monday 1st April 2024 our prices will be increasing across all paint ranges.

Whilst we appreciate that price increases are never easy, Thorndown Paints are very high performing and compared to the prices of comparable and other big brands, we still offer very good value for money for the quality of raw materials that goes into our paint.

Thank you for your business and support.

Best Selling Wood Paint Colours 2023

Thorndown-Wood-Paint-Best-Selling-Colours-2023-Blog

If you’re looking for ideas for what colours to use in the home and garden, then the Best Selling Wood Paint Colours chart for 2023 is a good place to start.

Each year we carry out a review of the top 20 best selling paint colours throughout the previous year, creating a chart for easy analysis and reference. You can review them all since we launched Thorndown in 2018, by visiting the Best Selling Colours page on our website.

Throughout 2023 the heritage colours and natural wood tones were still the most popular, with blues, greens and greys filling the charts. For the first time the top 3 colours in both 2.5 litre and 750ml tins were the same, with UV Clear at the top, followed by the beautiful grey-green tone of Old Sage Green then the stunning rich intensity of Blackdown.

Within the chart many colours didn’t change on previous years but jostled for position as constant favourites, such as Bishop Blue, Cavepool Grey and Cow Parsley White.

There were some new additions to the chart with Field Green, Wetlands Green, Axe Blue and Launcherley Blue, all popular colours from the Somerset Heritage Colour Collection.

We all need beautiful colours in our lives to enrich and inspire us. We hope you find these charts helpful but you can continue to explore our ranges and colours in our Shop, and you can request free colour charts by emailing studio@thorndown.co.uk

Hand Painted Wood Paint Colour Sample Blocks

Thorndown-Wood-Paint-colour-Sample-Blocks

You can now order Thorndown Wood Paint Colour Sample Blocks, delivered direct to your door!

Now available as an alternative to Wood Paint 150ml sample tins are these beautifully hand painted colour sample blocks, so you can see the exact colour of the paints that catch your eye at home.

Two coats (the recommended application) are painted onto FSC wood blocks measuring 41 x 46mm.

Choose the colours you’d like to see and order them as a size option on the website, for example if you like the look of Bishop Blue Wood Paint go to the Bishop Blue product page and on the TIN SIZE drop down menu, select the ‘Wooden painted sample’ option.

You can select up to 12 colours at only £1.50 each, for postage direct to your door via Royal Mail for just £1.99.

The blocks are painted with two coats for uniformity with the whole colour range, but we do recommend 2-3 coats for whites, off-whites, creams and semi-opaques for solidity of colour, or Stain Blocking Primer then 2 coats of paint colour. However the third coat is purely for aesthetic purposes so the painted blocks are a great way for you to see what these colours look like with two coats, then you can decide if you’d prefer a third coat and adjust coverage calculations accordingly.

Please note that there may be a slight variation in hue when painted onto substrates other than light or planed softwood, such as dark tropical hardwood or rough sawn timber.

If in any doubt or if you’d like to explore a colour further then you can buy a 150ml sample tin to paint up at home.

Garden Trugs

Taunton-Sheds-Trugs_Thorndown-Old-Sage-Green-and-Bullrush-Green-Wood-Paint_4

I’m slightly addicted to trugs and this obsession has been fuelled recently by Stuart at Taunton Sheds who’s been getting a bit crafty, and one of the pieces he’s been making are some fabulous wooden garden trugs.

Not only are their curvaceous forms aesthetically pleasing they’re also very practical and useful in the garden and around the home.

Posh Trugs

Everything that Taunton Sheds make and sell are all about quality and these trugs are made to the same high standards, with thick good quality softwood, cut and built beautifully.

He’s made a range of sizes and of course I have to go for the full range. The largest Stuart had painted with our Old Sage Green Wood Paint, then painted on leeks to one side and courgettes on the other. We then painted the medium trug in Old Sage Green to match then the small one in Bullrush Green.

Filled with fresh vegetables they’re an attractive and useful solution to storing veggies in the pantry.

Pretty Trugs

I also have a selection of trugs acquired over the years from garden centres, yet I can always find an excuse to buy more, mainly because there are so many pretty colours to paint them.

Painting garden trugs with Thorndown Wood Paint turns them into pretty features that look great in a shed or greenhouse, but is also a practical way of protecting them and making them last longer.

They get bashed around quite a lot, getting wet and dirty, so the protective wood paint coating makes them water-repellent and easy to clean. It takes hardly any time or paint so is a really cheap and quick project, either on new trugs or transforming old ones.

Use up old leftover wood paint or buy our 150ml sample tins for just £5.00 each.

More Murals with Thorndown Wood Paint

Frank-Harwood-Pink-Rhino-Glastonbury-Mural-Trail_Thorndown-Wood-Paint

Glastonbury is a wonderful place to live, work and visit, not just for the Glastonbury Festival but for the incredibly vibrant town and everything it has to offer. The Glastonbury Mural Trail celebrates local artists bringing more colour and wonderful creations to the streets of the town and we are very proud to have been involved in it from the start.

Two artists that have used our wood paint for their wall murals have recently added more murals to the ever growing trail.

Frank Harwood

The fabulous Frank Harwood creates another stunning mural just off the High Street of Glastonbury on the corner wall of the Crystals shop. He has now painted three impressive murals for the trail (‘The Waving Woman’ and ‘Adam and Eve’) in the streets of Glastonbury using Thorndown Wood Paint.

His latest ‘Pink Rhino’ is inspired by a piece by the medieval Renaissance artist Durer who created the image of the rhino having never seen one, interpreting descriptions, a sketch, and folklore into a very realistic image of a rhino, bar the extra horn on the neck because in those times, rhinos were believed to be unicorns!

Faye Suzannah

You can see Faye’s work throughout Glastonbury as part of the Glastonbury Mural Trail created and curated by local artist Kim von Coels. Faye’s first piece using Thorndown Wood Paint was a beautiful and uplifting mural of sunflowers  that welcomed visitors from a car park into the High Street.

Glastonbury Town Council commissioned Faye to paint the feature wall of the main Town hall and her beautiful design and palette creates a calming atmosphere of wonder for all occasions. Her murmurations inspired mural in the trail is another gorgeous piece on the outskirts of town.

You can read more about the amazing murals on the Glastonbury Mural Trail painted with our wood paint by following this link.
