Timber planters can last a lifetime if they’re looked after well.

Winter and spring can be the perfect time to carry out maintenance on planters as plants are dormant and often cut back over winter.

Just because it’s winter it doesn’t mean that you can’t paint exterior wood. It can be the best opportunity to paint garden timber whilst plants are dormant and cut back, making access to fences, trellises, arbours and planters a lot easier.

You often get some lovely sunny dry spells in winter with a soft breeze blowing – the perfect conditions for painting outside and enjoying the winter sun!

For Peelable Glass Paint the winter is not the best time to paint externally as drying/curing time is longer than the wood paint. However, I did paint some Christmas stencil decorations on the external glass of a french door when it had just started to snow and three years later, they were still there. They looked too pretty to remove but finally I did, providing a fresh blank canvas for a new project.

If you’ve got some leftover Wood Paint then a great way to use it is to paint your own Christmas tree decorations.

It’s a fun crafting activity for kids, families and all ages. You can get wooden tree decorations fairly cheaply from craft stores and online, and they come in a great variety of shapes and designs.

We got a selection of baubles, Christmas trees, reindeer, snowflakes, snowmen and stars, then painted them with Golden Somer, Rowan Berry Red, Swan White and Yew Green.

Baubles were turned into Christmas puddings and reindeers decorated with a shiny red nose for Rudolph.

You can let your imagination run wild and blend paint colours together for decorative effect.

We hung them on our outdoors Christmas tree that sits outside our kitchen window, bringing festive cheer to meals and the garden. As Thorndown Wood Paint is engineered for exterior use, the wooden decorations won’t suffer from being left outside in wintry wet weather.

Rather than buying an advent calendar every year, why not make your own that you can use again and again.

We made our own Advent Calendar with plastic fillable baubles bought online from a craft shop, and painted them with Peelable Glass Paint. Each family member decorated 6 each, painting the number of the month on one side and decorating the other with a festive design.

When the paint was dry we filled each bauble with a chocolate, popped the sides together then strung them together and hung them across the kitchen window.
