Thorndown Wood Paint on Bee Hives
National Bee Supplies selected Thorndown Wood Paint for use on their range of cedar bee hives and polystyrene hives and nucleus boxes.
They are proud to be the leading manufacturer of Canadian Western Red Cedar beehives. The company was founded in the 1980s with the mission to provide the best quality hives in the market; 40 years later, and their principles of using the finest materials and quality craftsmanship still apply today.
In 2021, they assessed their carbon footprint and have been working hard to ensure that they more than offset their production. They’ve achieved this through the installation and refurbishment of over 1000 solar panels, tree planting, and wildflower meadow creation down where they’re based in Devon.
Their commitment to the environment and to providing high-quality products led them to Thorndown’s range of water-based eco paints.
Their Canadian Western Red Cedar wood will last for many years without treatment, but it will take on a silvery appearance over time. For those who wish to preserve the glorious colours and grain patterns of the timber, Thorndown’s translucent UV Clear Wood Paint is a perfect choice.
UV Clear Wood Paint is designed specifically for exterior use and creates a high performing water repellent protective coating. The UV blockers slow down the greying process and will keep the cedar timber looking brand new for years. The picture in the gallery above shows a hive with half un-treated and the other painted with Thorndown UV Clear, then left to weather over the winter months.
They’ve also introduced some of Thorndown’s coloured paint. These are perfect for their polystyrene hives and nucleus boxes which need to be painted to protect them from the weather.
First and foremost, comes the safety of bees. Thorndown’s water-based formula with virtually no VOC or odour means the beauty of their hives can be preserved with no harm to the bees. Once the coating has dried bees can be returned quickly to their hive homes.

Best-selling Paint Colours 2021
Each year we review best selling colours across the Wood Paint and Peelable Glass Paint Colours.
It’s a great guide for trends and an aid for inspiration and colour selection.
There’s stiff competition with thousands of colours to choose from and each year it produces fascinating yet often unsurprising results!
Painting with Translucent Wood Paints
Translucent wood paints behave differently than opaques, and are more like wood stains. So the painting technique has to be amended accordingly.
We have put together a short video showing how to apply by either roller or paint brush.
The demonstration shows painting Hazel Wood Paint on softwood shelves, and overpainting an old floor coating with Hazel Wood Paint.
Using these techniques means you also use less paint so your pounds spread further!
Planter Maintenance
Timber planters can last a lifetime if they’re looked after well.
Winter and spring can be the perfect time to carry out maintenance on planters as plants are dormant and often cut back over winter.
We have put together a project page to show you some simple tips on maintenance from cleaning to painting. There’s also a couple of tutorial videos taking you through simple maintenance and another on how to save an old planter without much effort.
As most planters can be painted or maintained with just a wood paint 150ml sample tin, it’s also a nice cheap, quick and easy job to do.
Painting in Winter
Just because it’s winter it doesn’t mean that you can’t paint exterior wood. It can be the best opportunity to paint garden timber whilst plants are dormant and cut back, making access to fences, trellises, arbours and planters a lot easier.
You often get some lovely sunny dry spells in winter with a soft breeze blowing – the perfect conditions for painting outside and enjoying the winter sun!
Our unique blend of high-performance resins means that our Wood Paint (and Wall Paint) can be applied in temperatures as low as 0oC – just don’t let it freeze in the tin or on the wood.
We’ve put together some simple tips and advice for you to follow to make painting in winter easy. The key is in the planning so follow this link for advice and an easy checklist.
Or just paint your interior wood as you can use Thorndown Wood Paint on any wood, anywhere – skirting boards, doors, window frames, furniture and kitchen cupboards. There’s plenty of inspiration and advice in our Projects section to help you along with painting projects.
For Peelable Glass Paint the winter is not the best time to paint externally as drying/curing time is longer than the wood paint. However, I did paint some Christmas stencil decorations on the external glass of a french door when it had just started to snow and three years later, they were still there. They looked too pretty to remove but finally I did, providing a fresh blank canvas for a new project. If you do need to carry out any painting projects between late autumn and spring, we have put together a guide on how to work with challenging weather and temperatures.
There are plenty of interior painting and arts & crafts projects that you can carry out with Peelable Glass Paint and our Projects section has lots of ideas for you.
And of course there’s our high-performance Wall Paint to refresh any room and surface inside your home.
Happy painting!
Paint Your Own Christmas Tree Decorations
If you’ve got some leftover Wood Paint then a great way to use it is to paint your own Christmas tree decorations.
It’s a fun crafting activity for kids, families and all ages. You can get wooden tree decorations fairly cheaply from craft stores and online, and they come in a great variety of shapes and designs.
We got a selection of baubles, Christmas trees, reindeer, snowflakes, snowmen and stars, then painted them with Golden Somer, Rowan Berry Red, Swan White and Yew Green.
Baubles were turned into Christmas puddings and reindeers decorated with a shiny red nose for Rudolph.
You can let your imagination run wild and blend paint colours together for decorative effect.
We hung them on our outdoors Christmas tree that sits outside our kitchen window, bringing festive cheer to meals and the garden. As Thorndown Wood Paint is engineered for exterior use, the wooden decorations won’t suffer from being left outside in wintry wet weather.
We even used Thorndown Peelable Glass Paint and the Christmas stencils to decorate the red bucket, making it even more fun and festive! ????
