Christmas Opening and Deliveries

Christmas Opening Dates

The factory and office will be closing at 1pm on Friday 23rd December for the Christmas period and re-opening on Tuesday 3rd January 2023 at the usual times of 9am to 5pm.

However, a Christmas elf will be popping into the factory on Thursday 29th December from 10am to 2pm to get out urgent orders, with couriers delivering on Friday 30th December.

If you need anything for the New Year weekend then please add a note to your order instructions saying ‘urgent order’ then the elf can prioritise you. You can also contact us via email on studio@thorndown.co.uk.

Please note that postal orders will most likely be backed up and there will be delays in delivery so all sample orders and Craft Packs that normally go out via Royal Mail will be affected. If you need samples or craft packs urgently please contact the office on 01458 258588 or email studio@thorndown.co.uk so we can arrange an express delivery option with you.

Christmas Deliveries

As usual couriers will be pretty busy and the postal service swimming in packages so to ensure delivery of Christmas orders we would recommend that you place your order by 12pm on Monday 19th December.

We will still be processing orders on Thursday 22nd December and couriers will be delivering Friday 23rd December so you may still get your package, but any orders being delivered by Royal Mail (150ml sample pots, 40ml Peelable Glass Paint craft tins, and Stencil Craft Packs) will be subject to longer delays and delivery lead times.

She said: “The natural world has been very much in the forefront of people’s minds and consumer choices, which has had a huge impact on design.

“For the autumn and winter months, warm, comforting but darker and more striking colours are set to be used with dark lush greens such as Field Green and Yew Green, comforting warm and wholesome dark blues like Bishop Blue, and the enriching dark plum of Whortleberry set to be the perfect colours for the seasons ahead.

“Greys will also continue to be popular, with both dark greys – like Bergamot Grey – and lighter shades, such as Zinc Grey, complimenting and contrasting wonderfully with the darker more vibrant colours.”

Charlotte’s top tips for organising sheds;

1. It’s really important to start with a declutter; take everything out of the shed and you will realise all the things you don’t need taking up space!

2. Categorise everything! Place all paint in one pile, garden tools and so on. Then you can clearly see what you have and how you can find a system to keep it all organised

3. Watertight boxes are great for storing paddling pools as well as garden lights for the winter, as the boxes they come in take up a lot of room and you can group items together

4. Use the walls of the shed; place hooks so you can hang larger items like snow sledges or ladders so that they don’t get lost

5. Place items you need the most access to at the front – like bikes / garden gloves 💫

Jacqui Joseph is renowned in the worlds of fashion and home interiors, and features regularly on television in shows such as “Money For Nothing”, “Homes Under the Hammer”, “This Morning Live”, “Lorraine” and “BBC Morning Live”.

Jacqui is a whizz at design and transformations, and used Thorndown Wood Paint to upcyle an old Stag dresser that was destined for the tip. She rescued the Stag chest moments before it was about to be thrown in the skip at one of the Recycling Centre’s she ‘frequents’ whilst filming for BBC1’s Money For Nothing.

Below she describes how she transformed the old piece of furniture into a stunner.

‘I was really pleased I managed to save it, although it was looking a little worse for wear! I knew it had potential to live on.

After removing the hardware and giving the chest a good clean and a light sand, I went in with a mix of two colours from Thorndown Paints (Bishop Blue & Cavepool Grey) I loved both colours! And they mixed so well and look amazing.

I love the fact that Thorndown Paints are made in the UK, this is really important to me. With my Jacqui Joseph Designs Home Accessories everything is made in the UK…even the items like the serving trays which I don’t physically make! I finished the top with a foiling technique that compliments the colour tone. Thank you Thorndown Paints!’

Jacqui hand painted stripes on the drawer bottoms by masking out diagonal strips and painting the Bishop Blue and Cavepool Grey mix in the gaps. It’s such an effective trick and makes the drawers look even classier!

The foiling technique gives the top of the dresser an aged patina look that finishes it off beautifully. We love this piece and it’s great to see what a talented designer can create with our paints. Thorndown are happy to announce the launch of a NEW water-based Wood Preserver, joining their high-performing Wood Paint range, and NEW Stain Blocking Primer.

Suitable for use on all new or existing external softwood, this Wood Preserver is affective against brown rot (Gloeophyllum trabeum, Coniophora puteana, Poria placenta) and blue stain fungi (Aureobasidium pullulans spp, Sclerophoma pithyophilla).

Platinum Jubilee Decorating with Peelable Glass Paint

Making decorations for the Platinum Jubilee is cheap and easy with Thorndown Peelable Glass Paint. You can paint your own bunting onto windows and reuse or repurpose old glass bottles and jars, saving them from the recycling box and transforming them into decorative household items, such as tea light holders.

Thorndown Peelable Glass Paint is water-based, non-toxic, low in odour and VOC, and is made with a 100% recycled plastics resin so it’s pretty good for the environment and cuts down on waste.

In the gallery above, some old glass jars have been painted with stencils and transformed into pretty tea light holders, ready for Platinum Jubilee celebrations. There’s a dragon painted in Dragon Red, Swan White unicorn and palace painted in Elf Blue. Dragon Red stripes were painted on an old glass jug so the party table would have jugs in red, white and blue.

On the windows I painted bunting flags in Dragon Red, Swan White and Elf Blue, using Zinc Grey for the bunting string and crown and palace stencils. You could use a triangle stencil for the bunting flags applying the paint with a brush, mini roller or sponge, or apply a tape such as FrogTape to mark out the lines of the triangle bunting. I went for the cheapest option and just painted on freehand.

When it came to the bunting stretch in the middle window, the first time I went off line and painted some flags too high. I could have followed the advice I gave to a customer and painted on the bunting string first so I had a line to follow, but I didn’t. However with Peelable Glass Paint it’s easy to fix mistakes. Either wipe the paint off straight away using a damp cloth, or leave it to dry, then scrape away messy or smudged areas with a finger nail or other object such as a teaspoon, or peel it off and start again.

I went for the peeling option as it’s a lot more fun. I left the paint to dry during the week so it had plenty of time to cure and form a film, then the next weekend I peeled it off, painted a bunting line in the right place, then painted on new flags. I also decided to paint a second coat on the dried flags as a second coat makes the colour richer and the coating more solid/opaque.

Peelable Glass Paint is designed originally as a greenhouse shading paint so it lets some light through. When light passes through it you can see application marks but when no light is passing through, such as when viewed externally, it is opaque/solid.

With the crown and palace stencil I used Zinc Grey Peelable Glass Paint and an old bathroom sponge to apply the paint. I overloaded the sponge a bit so paint seeped under the stencil and smudged, but I just left it to dry then tidied it up by scraping away paint from areas where it shouldn’t have been with my finger nail, the edge of a teaspoon and the end of an art paint brush, making the image far crisper and cleaner.

It was so much fun creating the window scene and tea light holders and now the perfect party scene is created for Platinum Jubilee celebrations!

You can buy Peelable Glass Paint in 40ml craft tins so it’s really cheap and a little paint goes a long way, enabling you to carry out lots of little painting projects. Below are some videos showing how quick and easy it was to paint these items.

Wood Paint Price Increase & Improvements

PRICE INCREASE

Due to a constant series of substantial increases in prices from suppliers of raw materials and packaging throughout 2021, we are having to increase the price of our Wood Paint in all sizes bar the 150ml tin, which we have fixed at the price of £5.00.

As of Monday 4th April 2022 the prices will be increasing as below.
750ml: £20.00
2.5l: £50.00
20l: £350.00 (available for direct purchase from the factory)

Whilst we appreciate that price increases are never easy, Thorndown Wood Paint is very high performing and compared to the prices of comparable and other big brands, we still offer very good value for money for the quality of raw materials that goes into our paint.

AND THE GOOD NEWS IS . . .
We have added flash rust protection to our Wood Paint meaning that when you paint it on and it hits metal such as screws and nails, it will stop rust from occurring so no more nasty rust stains coming through the coating! If rust is already there then you should be able to clean it off so there’s none left, then paint on a coloured or clear paint and the rust won’t come back.

The threshold for free delivery will remain at £60.00.
