Each year we review the Best Selling Colours for the Wood Paint and Peelable Glass Paint ranges, presented in a Top 20 chart for each tin size. It’s fascinating to see what colours are in vogue but also how little changes over the years with natural tones dominating in the larger tin sizes, and with more variety and vibrancy in the smaller project and hobby tins.
It’s not surprising that the calmer, natural more neutral tones are the most popular in the larger 2.5 litre tins of Wood Paint, as that is the tin size we use on our timber buildings in the garden. Most people like to have a colour that reflects nature and sits calmly in the garden, nestling into planting schemes and being a place that we can escape to. This explains the dominance of greys, greens, blues and natural wood tones in this Top 20, remaining fairly constant over the years with only shades and hues varying in fashion.
Sometimes people like to make bold statements of summerhouses, craft rooms or sheds, especially when not overlooked by neighbours they might upset, so pretty beach-like colours such as Goblin Blue takes its place in the chart with braver standout colours like Rowan Berry Red or Cheddar Pink sitting just outside and in the 750ml chart.
Best Selling Wood Paint Colours 2020 & 2019
When it comes to the smaller pack size of 750ml, these tend to be used for window frames and trims on timber buildings so you get a lot of complimentary colours such as cream, stone or white. However, this pack size is very versatile and is used on many wooden objects from doors to planters and arches, and interior furniture, so you get a wide range of colour choice from natural tones to brighter colours including Adonis Blue and Mudgley Mustard.
The 150ml tin sizes are mostly used so people can try out colours at home to make sure it’s exactly what they want before painting up large expanses on timber buildings, but it’s also used a lot for smaller craft and home projects. It goes a long way so you can upcycle old boxes and crates or transform pieces of furniture in colours to contrast to your interior design.
PEELABLE GLASS PAINT
This is a very popular product for shading greenhouses and conservatories so lots of beautiful natural tones and greens dominate the 750ml tin chart. However people also use it for privacy screening so Bat Black is a popular choice for blacking out windows, and Goblin Green is another popular choice as a translucent colour as it is thought to make plants happy and encourage growth.
Best Selling Peelable Glass Paint Colours 2020 & 2019
Peelable Glass Paint is also a great paint for arts & crafts so in the smaller 150ml tin size you see a wider variety of colours with lots of bright translucent colours proving very popular, with all the colours of the rainbow. It also provides shading for roofs and panels of greenhouses too so the more muted natural opaque colours also appear throughout the chart.
Whatever colours make you happy we can provide you with pretty much everything you want from our extensive colour charts, or over 1800 RAL Classic and Design colours so paint it happy!
Here at Thorndown we have nature and sustainability at the forefront of our minds. All of our packaging is recyclable or compostable but we do also like to re-use as much as we can.
Our tins are made from fully recyclable metal but we think they’re attractive enough to be re-used as storage containers or plant pots!
Wash out leftover paint then drill some holes in the bottom for drainage. Pop in some compost (peat free) and add horticultural grit to further aid drainage. Pot up the plant and hey presto, a free plant pot for inside the home or out in the garden. You can even use the lid as a saucer.
For displaying outside you can use the handles to create a vertical garden, hanging them off a ladder or fixings.
Alternatively, don’t drill any holes and just drop a plant in their plastic plant pot straight into the tin for an attractive plant pot holder. Simple ways to re-use and re-purpose!

TV Carpenter Wayne Perrey was back with Alan Titchmarsh on ITV’s Love Your Weekend in January 2021 to show how to make vertical planters using existing fence panels.
He first made one painted in Swan White Wood Paint for David Domoney to show in his segment demonstrating a variety of vertical planting options.
He then joined Alan to show him how to make one using gravel boards and painted with Thorndown Ash Wood Paint for a natural timber finish.
In November 2020 he was on the show to design and build a raised planter with seating.
Wayne made it with wood from pallets, gravel boards and old bits and pieces that he repurposed for detailing such as the framing around the planter sections.
Wayne went for a sophisticated combination of Avalon Blue and Rock Rose Wood Paint to look striking in the garden and compliment planting.

Watch the video on Saturday morning which will be uploaded to Wayne’s TV Carpenter Instagram account and grid and copied to Thorndown’s showing the colour drop and the mixed paint colour, or ‘Peel to Reveal’ for the last few weeks where you’ll be guessing the Pealable Glass Paint colour
Guess what paint colour you think it is and comment on the post by midnight on Tuesday. Remember that the dried paint colour will be a bit darker and slightly different to the liquid colour!

The RAL European colour system was created in 1925 as a quality assurance organisation and began to create a standardised colour system in 1927.
We use a RAL tinting machine that is calibrated to accurately produce over 1800 RAL Classic and Design colours. The RAL tinting machine works on a level of 99.9% accuracy meaning that every colour made is absolutely spot on! In addition to this we introduced an additional level of quality control and paint up every RAL colour we produce to make sure that the output matches the control colour swatches on the RAL fan deck.
With over 1800 colours you’re also totally spoilt for choice and can trust the fact that we make accurate RAL colours so you can have a RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey wood paint on your front door to match the coating on your windows.

One of the leading acrylic resins on the market is used to make Thorndown Wood Paint hard-wearing, water-repellent and long-lasting. VOC free (volatile organic compounds that can be harmful to the environment and humans) architectural exterior-grade colour pigments are used making Thorndown Wood Paint colours some of the best on the market and made to last for years and years.
It contains no fillers so only the ingredients you need are put in which also enables a thin coating that allows the wood grain to show through in all its natural beauty. We also demonstrate how to use stain-blocking primer and wood paint on a planter.
Internationally renowned artist Jonathan Minshull is also featured in a video clip painting the Avalon Marshes mural with our Wood Paint for the Glastonbury Mural Trail. A very inspirational and talented artist!

Although there won’t be much Trick or Treating going on this year you can still celebrate at home. Using a Peelable Glass Paint Halloween Stencil Craft Pack is the perfect way to decorate your home and re-use or upcycle old items.
Thorndown’s Peelable Glass Paint is made from a 100% recycled plastic resin, is low in odour, has virtually no VOCs and is non-toxic making it perfect for kids. Being water-based it’s also really easy to clean up with just water but don’t let your brushes dry out as that makes it a lot harder to remove and don’t wear your Sunday best as paint likes to stay on clothes. The best part is that when Halloween is over you just peel the paint off your windows and mirrors to remove it!
Paint old glass jars and plastic pots then fill them with spooky treats for the kids. Rather than going out with a Trick or Treat bucket you could do a treasure hunt at home for the kids to fill their buckets with. Glass lanterns are perfect for decorating with spooky stencils and you can even pour Peelable Glass Paint out to let it dry and cut out Halloween shapes to create window clings that stick on windows and mirrors. Visit the Window Clings project page for tips on how to do this.
Working from home was a common affair for many people and nowadays it’s something that is far more normal and here to stay. It has many advantages from cutting out the need for any travel being better for the pocket and environment, and can lead to greater productivity from working in a relaxed and quiet environment that allows you to focus.
That is, as long as you have your own space! Garden studios and sheds can provide the perfect home office environment, allowing you to escape your home and enter a space dedicated to you and your work. Decorating it helps to create an atmosphere that is right for you, whether it be a plain minimalist space or a cosy homey vibe.
Interior Stylist Joanna Thornhill, built a ‘shedio’ at the bottom of her garden, creating the perfect space for her to work from. She painted the exterior with Thorndown Mercury Grey Wood Paint and Blackdown on the window frames, door frames and fascias. A classically cool combination that sits well in the garden, complimenting planting rather than dominating the space.
She used Mercury Grey Wood Paint on the floor boards too, protecting them and tying in the exterior to the interior space. On the interior walls she painted Dormouse Grey with the velvety brown grey colour giving the interior some warmth and depth.
Painting the ceiling in Greymond Wood Paint brightens up the space, keeping to the grey theme with this soft off-white, whilst adding extra reflected light. She contrasts it perfectly by painting the ceiling beams with Blackdown wood paint, giving it a traditional country cottage feel. Hanging house plants add natural fresh green into the space with the architectural spiky stripy leaves of the Spiderplant adding interest.
Homely furniture and soft furnishings along with cool vintage finds creates a wonderfully warm and inviting space to work and relax in. The gorgeous vintage mirror on the wall behind the log burner add vintage chic and reflect even more light throughout the space.
Adding vases, pot plants, occasional lighting, and retro nik-naks creates a chic bohemian home office for Jo to feel inspired by as she sits at her desk working away, with a relaxing area to take well earned breaks in.
Painting your home office will not only protect the wood from dirt, damage and decay, but also gives you the opportunity to create a truly unique space.
