Over the last couple of months we’ve been busy working with our web agency to design and develop a new website that will offer a faster and more streamlined platform, but still with the same great content.

The new website and online shop has now gone live but as with all things technical, there are some teething problems so please bear with us.

Garden Answers sneaky preview of 4 New Colours

Thorndown-Somerset-Heritage-Colour-Collection-Wood-Paint-blog

We are very excited to be adding 6 new colours to the Somerset Heritage Colour Collection, being officially launched in March 2022.

These wild and natural tones bring an extra dimension to the beautiful greens, blues, creams and hedgerow colours of the Somerset Heritage Colour Collection.

However, Garden Answers are having a sneaky preview of 4 of the new colours and they’re appearing in a colour feature in the July issue, which hits the shelves on 29th June 2021. So although these colours aren’t officially being launched and added to the Wood Paint range until March 2022, we’ll be adding these 4 new colours to the online shop in case readers fall in love and want to order them.

As with the existing 18 colours within the collection, these new colours are inspired by the Somerset countryside. Axe Blue is a moody, smoky blue with a grey hue, reflecting the watery depths of the River Axe as it flows through Somerset on its journey to the English Channel.

The subtle grey green of Tree Lichen is a beautifully gentle shade inspired by the lichen that is so prevalent in the southwest of England where the clean air provides the perfect environment for it to grow.

Whey White is a refreshingly natural cream fresh from the dairy farms of Somerset, and Whortleberry brings a deep dark purple plum colour to the collection, inspired by the wild blueberries of Somerset that go into Bumblees Preserves Whortleberry jam.

The official launch of all new colours will take place at The Garden Press Event in London in March 2022 where Field Green and Hartlake Blue will be revealed.

Explore the wilds of Somerset with Thorndown Wood Paints and discover new colours that you’ll want throughout your home and garden.

Splinter Scenery Pods with Thorndown Wood Paints

During the pandemic and lockdowns, many businesses have not been able to carry out the work they would normally and many have had to innovate and re-invent themselves to see them through.

One such company is Splinter Scenery who normally design and construct for the theatre industry. They are responsible for some amazing sets including Blythe Spirit which we were lucky enough to see in Bath Theatre and were absolutely blown away by!

They collaborated with Define Architects to create and build a pretty impressive set of pods to shelter bar-goers in.

The pods aren’t just your everyday outside shelters that you’d find in a pub garden, but are packed with design features from cladding running in vertical and diagonal lines to support beams with the most elegant of joints.

The exteriors have all been painted with Thorndown Wood Paint in RAL 7012 Basalt Grey and UV Clear with an anti-graffiti coat on top.

Internally the attention to design and build continues at its stunningly high level, with bench seating, table and shelving making the best of the space and creating a beautiful home environment that one could easily move into!

The interior was also painted in Thorndown UV Clear throughout to protect the wood from the external elements and also to make it easier to clean; essential in a busy bar environment.

Understandably the client was delighted with the finished result and we’re sure the customers will be very happy in these pods for many years.

Forest Grow Off with Thorndown Wood Paint

Get Your Gardening Gloves On

We often team up with Forest Garden Products on promotions as they’re a great company with a fab range of products.

In recognition of the thousands of people across the country who’ve recently got into gardening, they started a campaign where two families go ‘trowel to trowel’ in a ‘Grow Off‘ to see who can grow the best home produce.

Both families were given the same Forest Tall Wall Victorian Greenhouse and some raised planters, a choice of our Wood Paint to paint and protect the timber products, Melcourt peat free growing compost , seeds from Mr Fothergills and seed trays and pots from Webbs.

One family chose to paint theirs in our RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey Wood Paint to go with their chic and sleek modern house.

The second family chose Wispy Willow to paint their timber products in to create a soft country cottage feel.

Their journey into the world of grow your own has been a fascinating one and it makes for a fun and informative read, so please join them on their ‘Grow Off‘ journey.

Garden Answers Feature

Thorndown-Paint-Garden-Answers

If you’re an avid reader of this great gardening magazine (like me!) then you will spot Thorndown’s Peelable Glass on page 11 of the April issue.

It features a picture sent into us by one of our customers who decorated her greenhouse in an art-deco stained glass style. Linda removed her panes of glass, giving them a good clean then rinsing thoroughly with water to remove any muck or film that could block or repel the glass paint. She applied the translucent glass paints using a roller with a foam sleeve as they soak up less paint and leave a nice smooth finish. Linda only applied one coat but you can paint on a second for a more solid/opaque coating.

We think it looks great and is a quick and easy way to brighten up a greenhouse through the winter months. On a practical level it offers shading and screens untidy seed trays waiting to be cleaned for the new sowing season.

By planning your design and colour scheme, using Peelable Glass Paint can also turn your greenhouse into an attractive feature and part of your garden design.

We have teamed up with Garden Answers magazine to give away 20 x 150ml tins of Peelable Glass Paint in a colour of your choice. To enter all you have to do is send them a postcard or email (address details on p101 of the magazine) with your name, address and favourite colour. Good luck!

Thorndown Wood Paint on Love Your Garden

Thorndown-Paint-Love-Your-Garden-With-Alan-Titchmarsh

The brilliant garden transformation series Love Your Garden returned to ITV1 on Tuesday 24 July 2018, starring Thorndown Wood Paints in the first episode of the series!

A very inspirational Betty had the Titchmarsh Team Treatment with fencingbrick wallspergola and terracotta pots painted with our Greymond Wood Paint, brightening up the garden and making it easier for Betty to see. The beautiful Forest Henley Summerhouse was painted with Bishop Blue Wood Paint using Greymond as an accent highlight on frames.

Having previously worked with the series over the years we were delighted to be selected as a supplier in the same year that we launched Thorndown paints. Ben Thornborough, Thorndown Managing Director, could even be seen on episode one helping the lovely Thea paint everything in sight.

In Episode 4 fresh and pretty Parlyte Green and lush Reed Green were used in the festival themed garden of a very brave and inspirational woman.

Industry legends Alan Titchmarsh and David Domoney work with the very talented Katie Rushworth and Frances Tophill to create incredible garden designs transforming people’s lives. Colour plays a very large part in garden design and painting wood paint on items such as fences, benches and summerhouses are a great way to create a feature and tie these elements into the design. It’s a great and easy trick to use in your own garden!

Garden Answers

We are delighted to be featured in the July issue article ‘Colour up Your Garden’ that discusses the virtues and design tips for using wood paint and wood stain in the garden.

Garden Answers magazine is one of my favourites, brimming with garden features, practical tips and advice, and of course, beautiful photography to pore over. Page 98 lists some paints on the market including our very own Thorndown Wood Paint.

It offers a simple comparison from the cheaper end of the market with lower-quality solutions such as Cuprinol Garden Shades and Ronseal Garden Paint to the higher end, Farrow & Ball and Thorndown. We know that the ingredients we use are of a higher quality compared to all of these brands making our wood paint the best value and a great choice!

Thorndown’s Goblin Blue and Rowan Berry Red Wood Paint were also selected for the ‘Freshen walls & woodwork’ article on page 100, giving some great design ideas for colour combinations.

Thorndown Brand & Packaging News + Awards!

Thorndown Logo

Thorndown’s revolutionary tin design, packaging and branding are being recognised for their innovation and style. We worked with the incredibly talented Brown&co agency to create the Thorndown paint brand and packaging range.

To reflect our West Country nature we have used language that is entertaining and easy to read and understand. This is why we have been shortlisted for a Design Week award for writing!

The paint tins are a unique design that solves many of the annoying frustrations of a painter. Firstly the tin opening is wider to allow easier access for brushes. The tins have also been made wider and shorter so they have a better centre of gravity and are more stable, leading to a lower likelihood of them falling or being knocked over.

And finally, there is a gap of about 1cm in each tin from the top of the paint line to the tin top so when you stir your paint, it doesn’t immediately slop all over and down the sides of the tin.

Branding design has been carefully thought out to be fun, attractive, easy to navigate and understand. The colours and animal characters reflect the West Country Thorndown personality, love of nature, perfectionism and strong eco-credentials.

We hope that these design improvements add to the fun, practicality and beauty of using Thorndown paints!

The design process is described in these articles and it’s no wonder that the brand packaging design has been entered into so many awards!!

Painting Windows with Peelable Glass Paint

We’ve got some very talented customers out there who have been using Peelable Glass Paint to create the most amazing windows.

World Book Day Shop Window

With schools closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic it meant other ways to celebrate World Book Day had to be found. In Bampton, Devon, the local Learning and Resource Centre (LaRCS) set up a trail involving residential and business premises around the Mid Devon town. Each participant displayed a picture relating to a book and families and visitors were encouraged to get out and identify which book by the visual clues.

One business which took part was Bampton Fresh, an independently run Greengrocers. Their contribution was painted with Thorndown’s peelable glass paint by Sarah, who owns the business.

Sarah says “I love painting and I jumped at the opportunity to take part. Peelable paints were ideal for the project, great coverage and easily removed.”

Her ‘Cat in the Hat’ design from the Dr Seuss book is absolutely amazing and we’re sure children and adults loved looking at it and guessing the book.

Window Art

One artist made windows of escapism for a client who was suffering under lockdown, bringing the beauty of the natural world to them.

Another group of artists painted scenes on the windows of a new zero waste shop ‘Green Shoots Eco’, to promote their name and message to great effect.
