Painting Bathrooms with Thorndown Paints

For this job you really need the best wall paint for a bathroom. One that is highly durable so can stand up to being cleaned on a regular basis (soap and toothpaste get everywhere, especially with children in the home!), and one that is water-repellent so can deal with high levels of humidity and condensation.

Thorndown’s Wall Paint is perfect for bathrooms as the paint contains a blend of highly durable resins (including one made from 100% recycled plastics) that create a hard-wearing coating that performed better than many high-street brands in lab scrub tests. These high performance resins also make the paint coating very water-repellent so it won’t get damaged or stained by high levels of humidity.

As with all of Thorndown’s paints the colour pigments are VOC free architectural grade that look rich and stunning in the beautiful flat matt finish.

Being water-based and low in odour and VOCs the paint is a pleasure to use, won’t stink out your home and dries within 30 minutes to one hour so you can finish your painting quickly and easily.

Below we share with you a couple of bathroom makeover projects, transforming old dated rooms into gorgeous modern spaces.

PREPARATION

As with all painting jobs, preparation is key to the best results.

  1. Remove any bumps, imperfections and flaky surfaces with sandpaper, filling cracks and holes with caulk or filler that is suitable for use in bathrooms and with a water-based paint. A quick-drying one is always useful so that you’re not delayed too long
  2. Make sure that dirt and any old residues are removed from the surface prior to painting, by washing with soapy water or use something like sugar soap if need be
  3. With fresh plaster, you will need you will need to apply a mist coat once the plaster has dried fully. A mist coat is wall paint that is watered down by 30% or up to 40% if it’s really hot and dry
  4. Protect floor coverings from drips and spills with an appropriate covering, and mask anything you don’t want to paint such as window frames and light fittings

Select a paint colour that you love. If you can’t choose on screen in our Shop (click on the link) then you can try paint samples or request a hand painted colour chart with all of our wall paint colours by emailing studio@thorndown.co.uk

In this bathroom we chose Bullrush Green for the walls and Swan White for the ceiling, reflecting the light and making the room look taller and more spacious. We used Swan White Wood Paint for the skirting boards, door and door frame as it’s highly water-repellent and hard wearing, but if you prefer the flat matt finish of the wall paint rather than the satin finish of our Wood Paint, then you can use our Wall Paint on all woodwork and metal (direct with no need for a primer) for that colour-drenched look!

PAINTING

A combination of the fresh, gentle natural tone of Goddess Green was combined with Swan White on the ceiling and Swan White Wood Paint on the skirting boards, door frames and door.

With a new bathroom suite and flooring, a room that was very old and dated has been totally transformed into a gorgeous and relaxing space to soak in the tub!
